Fall 2006 Alaska Steelheading Fly Fishing Highlights!

Some people take vacations to resorts or beaches, go golfing or to Vegas... we go on fishing trips. It's what we do, we're fishing guides. When not guiding, we are off scouting rivers, taking pictures, making fishing movies, going on fishing trips with friends and yes, working a little, like on this website.

In the Fall of 2006, 5 of us set off to Alaska for a week of steelhead fishing. Fishing steelhead in Alaska is the best of both worlds, you're in Alaska and you are steelheading. What could be better? Not much. Most of the trips we go on are good, a few could have been better, some are great and every once in a while, down right spectacular. This mission fell into the spectacular category.

The river levels were up and down all week with periods of good, hard cold rain, but never completely blew out. There were a 2-3 days when conditions were marginal and we had to work for just a few fish, but there were also a couple days of picture perfect conditions. No other anglers for miles, 3-5 feet of visibility, chrome fish off the last rain and steelhead agressive to the fly. Those two days steelheading was so ridiculously good, we laughed uncontrollably for hours. Fish after fish after fish, cartwheeling, jumping so high the were landing in bankside trees, running in to the backing so quickly you didn't even have a chance to move your feet. Truely, unbelievable. This was one trip, that we will never forget.
